Description

Oxdale chain harrows are easy to use and attach to any tractor, 4×4 or low ground pressure vehicle tow bar.

Our range of harrows are designed to cover all applications from large farms, small holdings, equestrian venues and sports fields.
Harrowing should be carried out as part of any pasture management programme, in the spring. Preferably after grazing in conjunction with rolling and before any fertilizer application.

Chain harrows were originally designed to work behind horses, and it is best done at walking pace (between 3 and 4 mph) which was the average working speed of a horse.

Harrowing removes dead thatch lifts vegetation up and levels any mole hills. Its job is to allow air movement and root aeration which helps the soil to breathe and improves water infiltration. It reduces disease by exposing fungi and bacteria to sunlight which is essential for the health of the pasture.

Our trailed harrows are designed to pull the harrows at the correct angle so that the ground is completely covered.
The 4ft, 6ft and 8ft versions all come with a ‘3-way chain matt’. This means that the matt can be used at its most vigorous setting or turned so it is not as severe to the crop or completely turned over for the covering of seeds.

Features

A 3-way harrow offers a user more options to control the amount of pressure applied to the ground with the harrow. Very popular with landowners when fields poached by horses or with destroyed fields and ruts in the land. (A standard Fixed harrow just applies one firm amount of pressure to the ground and can only be pulled in one direction only)

The chain link and projecting point in the mat of chain making up a harrow is known as tine. These flexible tine rocks in 2 directions and the tine angle position is different.

Option 1 – Pulled in one direction and the land is scrapped more “aggressively”.
Option 2 – Take the draw bar off, clip to the other end of the mat and pull the other way, this allows the land to be scrapped more “passively”.
Option 3 – Turn the harrow up on its back, so the tines (spikes) stick upwards and the use with the flat surface to use as a “levelling mat”.

In summary – 3 way tine mats can be reversed to allow for passive or aggressive harrowing and also turned over on to its back for finer levelling.
